Spastic Colon
Known as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), a spastic colon is treatable, but an incurable condition. This condition affects about 25% of the world population. This condition affects the areas of the colon and bowel which is the location where the stool is created and kept. People who have to deal with this horrible condition of a spastic colon tend to report symptoms such as diarrhea, cramping of the abdominals, gas, nausea, dizziness, and bloating. There may be no solution for curing the spastic colon at this time, but there are methods available to treat it, therefore, allowing an individual to live a normal life.
Many people tend to think a spastic colon is fatal, or is a disease. This is simply not true. This condition is related to the functioning of the colon and bowel. The doctor will however, be able to test the person for conditions that have similar symptoms. If all of these procedures and tests return negative, then most likely the person is suffering with a spastic colon. The following diseases that need to be ruled out are:

- Colon cancer
- Celiac's Disease
- Inflammatory bowel syndrome
- Ovarian cancer
- Colitis ( Ulcer related)
When doctors are diagnosing the individual with a spastic colon they will require special examinations. This might be performed by a licensed professional gastroenterologist. Some of these examinations include:
- Urinalysis
- Stool inspection and testing. i.e. looking for blood in stool, bacteria growth
- Exam of the rectum
- Blood tests
- Gynecological exam for women
- Blood test for women to rule out Ovarian cancer
- Colonoscopy
- Tests of the liver and its functioning levels
These tests are very important to make sure the person is not dealing with something life threatening. Individuals should disclose all of their family history details, pre-existing conditions, surgeries, current conditions, and general information such as age, to their doctor or specialist.
When a personal is diagnosed with a spastic colon they should at all costs avoid high stress situations, fatty foods, high sugar juices and foods, laxatives, and insoluble fibres. It is important to remember that someone cannot diagnose themselves with a spastic colon, so it is imperative to see a doctor as soon as any of the above symptoms occur.
